Reviews of the Best Vacuum Cleaners

Deciding on what vacuum cleaner to purchase isn’t as straightforward as it seems. With so many manufacturers to choose from and with each offering dozens of different models, you really do have to spend some time in doing your research to make sure you buy the one that’s right for you.

For a good vacuum you should be looking at paying upwards of $80. And, if you really want to buy the best vacuum cleaner you should also consider paying as much as $500. But, before you spend any money you need to decide which type will best suit your cleaning requirements and which manufacturer offer the best value for money.
How to begin? First contrast. You should decide on whether you want bagged, bagless, canister, upright, cyclonic, commercial, pet, to use on carpet or hard flooring. Once you decide upon these main points can you then move on to compare the models currently on the market.

Each main type of vacuum cleaner has its advantages and disadvantages. Bagless vacuums are kinder to the environment and often come with cyclonic vacuums – more about these later. However, not everyone appreciates the mess involved in emptying the dust cups of bagless vacuums; indeed, many complain that, despite bagless models having HEPA filtration, this feature is kind of defunct when you have to empty the dust cup and dust flies back into the air.

The great debate about upright versus canister continues. Many claim that upright versions are more powerful than canisters (they point out that the hose is shorter from the brush to motor so less suction power is lost) but this isn’t necessarily true. And, there’s no doubt that canisters tend to be more lightweight and easier to use in many situations – you’re not having to drag around the whole vacuum all the time; reaching underneath furniture is easier and going up and downstairs is easier also.

Cyclonic vacuum cleaners are becoming ever more popular. Dyson introduced the first of these but now all major manufacturers offer them. Cyclonic vacuums produce suction by centrifugal force. Basically, the cylinders (dust caps) are spun around at high velocity, which produces suction. This differs significantly from traditional models and the claim is that cyclonic vacuums don’t  lose suction as the dust cup fills – even when it’s almost full.

Of course makers of traditional types claim that cyclonic can’t offer true HEPA filtration because there are no bags but this is strenuously denied. Anyhow, just about all major manufacturers now offer cyclonic versions (and they claim they come with true HEPA filtration).

The vacuum cleaner reviews on this site will help you decide which type is best for you. Contrast the different types on offer and then compare what’s on offer from each manufacturer. Only buy from manufacturers you’ve heard of or have been recommended to you by someone you know. And, finally, always make sure you fully understand the warranties that are offered with your purchase; some companies offer better warranties than others.
